The look, feel, and even the sound of a floor are important to creating the atmosphere and enjoyment of your home.  So, here are a few practical considerations:

Durability.   Will the floor stand up to the demands of your everyday life?  Hardwood floors certainly will. It’s no coincidence pro basketball courts have maple floors.

Longevity.   Can the floor be refinished and how many times?

Cost.   How much does an inexpensive floor really cost if it in 6 or 8 years? Hardwood floors can be refinished and will last a lifetime.

Health effects.   Doctors often recommend hardwood floors over other floor coverings because they trap less animal dander, dust, pollen, mites and mold – all of which can trigger allergic symptoms and respiratory problems. Studies have shown that, someone with allergies may experience improvements after allergens have been reduced or eliminated.  Natural hardwood floors throughout your home make it easier for you to reduce allergens by eliminating a haven for dust mites, all the while keeping your home warm and inviting. Make sure that any throw rugs used in your home are washed regularly in hot water.  Dust mites can't survive when the humidity levels are below 50%.  Hardwood enjoys an environment where the relative humidity is between 35 and 45 %.

Sustainability.   American hardwoods are sustainable, renewable and environmentally friendly. Every year, this country’s hardwood forests grow twice as much wood as we harvest from them.

Hardwood in the Kitchen ?  Today's finishes make hardwood floors in the kitchen an attractive choice that is easy to maintain and keep clean. According to the National Wood Flooring Association, a urethane finish is best for hardwood  in kitchens The number of finish coats required for optimal performance depends on the type of urethane finish selected.  A floor cloth or washable rug can protect the wood where spills and drips most commonly occur.

Pre-finished or Site-finished Floors Your decision to purchase hardwood flooring pre-finished at the factory or finished at the time of installation will depend on different factors. The type of project, your budget, and the experience of your installer are just a few of the more important factors.

With pre-finished flooring, the manufacturer applies a finish at the factory - typically an ultraviolet-cured resin. Manufacturers say these finishes are more consistent and durable because they are applied with spray guns in spray booths, yielding a uniform appearance from piece to piece.  Manufacturers offer a wide variety of stain colors and finishes.  Touch-ups are tricky, however,  if there's damage to the floor.

Finishing floors on site requires more time and skill than installing factory-finished materials. One advantage of site finishing is that a consistent finish can be uniformly applied across the entire installation and mill related defects can be corrected. Finishing on site requires preparation, and trade work that could jeopardize the quality of the finish will have to stop during the finishing process.
